Our Birds

Curious about our birds? Here are a few facts about Madagascan Lovebirds, aka Grey-Headed Lovebirds, to get you started!

The Madagascan Lovebird (Agapornis canus)

How Big Are They?

The grey-headed lovebird is the smallest species of the lovebird genus (Agapornis), being 13 cm (5 inches) long and weighing about 33 grams on average.

Why Do Only Some of Them Have Silver Heads?

Madagascan Lovebirds are sexually dimorphic, meaning the males and females are visually distinct. Males have the striking silvery grey plumage on their heads, while the females are shades of lovely green all over.

Where Do They Come From?

While our birds are lovingly bred in Stuttgart, Germany, the species as a whole are native to the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa. Fun fact: these birds are the only species of Lovebird not native to the mainland of the African continent!

What's Their Temperament Like?

These birds are playful and have an affectionate temperament. These birds are social creatures that thrive on interaction with their owners, but occasionally squabble with other birds (even other lovebirds) so co-housing them with other species is not advisable. They are also highly intelligent and can be trained to perform a variety of tricks. However, like many smaller birds, they may need time to adjust to a new person or environment before trusting them completely. With proper care and attention, these little birds make wonderful pets and bring joy to their owners for many years.

How Long Do They Live?

While every bird is different, with proper care and a healthy, safe environment these birds have been known to live up to 20 years.
