Diet
Good Health Starts With Good Food
Three Main Components of a Healthy Avian Diet
Fresh vegetables, fruits, and grains are key to your bird's health. Colloquially called "chop", these should make up ~60% of your bird's diet.
Yes, even small birds need pellets! A healthy pellet provides birds with nutrients they might not get from fresh food alone and should compose ~30% of your bird's diet.
This is where seeds and nuts go! By giving your bird seeds and nuts in small amounts in reward for good behavior you bond with your bird while helping them stay healthy. These should make up no more than 10% of your bird's diet.
Chop
Fresh food is the secret to a healthy, happy bird! Providing a variety of fresh ingredients such as kale, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, squash, zucchini, and seasonal vegetables in addition to limited amounts of fruits such as berries or pomegranate seeds, and limited grains such as dry quinoa, barley, or oats make a lovely chop for your bird to enjoy. You can even add VERY LIMITED amounts of seeds such as millet to draw your bird to the nutritious goodness. Feel free to make a batch, portion, and freeze!
Pellets
Pellets are key to filling the nutritional gaps that could be present in your bird's fresh diet. However, not all pellets are created equal! I have listed some options below that have great nutritional value without a bunch of unhealthy added junk. (Don't worry, we're not sponsored by any brand!)
